FAQs About 20 Yard Weight Limits & Permits
Will My 20 Yard Bin Have a Weight Limit?
Yes. All our dumpster rentals have a weight limit included in your price. The average weight limit of a 20 yard dumpster is 2 to 3 tons, or 4,000 to 6,000 pounds. That looks like about 3,000 to 4,200 square feet of carpeting. Keep in mind that both weight and capacity limits on dumpster rentals can differ from city to city due to local roadway safety regulations.
What if I Go Over the Weight Limit?
If you go over your dumpster’s weight limit, you’ll receive a per-ton overage fee. We measure the extra weight and charge you a per-ton, pro-rated fee, so you only pay for the debris you’ve tossed.
Where Can I Put a 20 Yard Dumpster Rental?
You need to keep your bin on a flat, paved surface, like your driveway, jobsite or the street. When we deliver your bin, our driver needs:
- 60 feet of space without obstacles, like parked cars
- 23 to 25 feet of vertical clearance (no hanging branches)
- Access codes or unlocked gates
Do I Need a Permit for a 20 Yard Dumpster?
If you keep your container on private property, like a driveway or jobsite, then you typically don’t need a permit. But if you choose to keep your bin in the street, you may need a permit ahead of time from your local municipality. Dumpster permits can cost between $10 and $100. There may only be a one-time fee, and sometimes there is no charge for a dumpster permit.
How Much Does a 20 Yard Dumpster Hold?
A 20 yard roll off dumpster holds 20 cubic yards of debris. This looks like:
- Six pickup truckloads
- 110 to 130 large 33-gallon trash bags
- 540 cubic feet of debris

Dropped off & picked up in a timely manner. The drivers were excellent! They somehow managed to back that huge truck up our long driveway (which is also uphill btw) & and they didn't even touch our grass! We were really worried about damage to our lawn or our neighbors. I thought they were reasonable in pricing too. Ryan was who I worked with over the phone and he was very helpful and kind! Great customer service!
